EU’s share of world population has almost halved over last 50 years
According to the latest report published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, “Between 1965 and 2015, the share of the world’s population (7.4 billion inhabitants in 2015) living in G20 members fell from 73% to around 64%.
The report mentioned that the most populous countries in the world were China and India, together accounting for 37% of the world’s population and 57% of the population of the G20 members. The population in China and India were 1.4 billion and 1.3 billion respectively.
United States is largest contributor to world GDP, ahead of the EU
Notably in 2016, G20 members generated 86% of global GDP while the United States, ahead of the EU, accounted for 25% of the world’s GDP. However, the United States share fell from 30% in 2006 to 22% in 2016.
Additionally, between 2006 and 2016, China and India had the highest GDP growth of all countries. There was a significant rise in China’s share of world GDP from 5% to 15% during 2016 which superseded Japan (9% in 2006 and 7% in 2016). There was also a significant increase in India’s share of world GDP forcing it from the 10th largest in G20 economy in 2006 to the 5th largest in 2016.
