The latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that from March 2018 to March 2019, employment increased in 298 of the 355 largest U.S. counties. National employment rose 146.5 million in March 2019, a 1.4% increase over the year. Midland, Texas, had the largest percentage increase in employment with a gain of 5.8% over the year. Average weekly wages for the nation inched up to $1,184 a 2.8 increase over the year in the first quarter.
Large County Employment in March 2019
Midland experienced the largest employment increase which occurred in natural resources and mining, which gained 2,745 jobs over the year (9.6%). However, Bay, Florida had the largest percentage decline in employment of 5.9% with the largest decreases in education and health services of 21.8% (2,449 jobs).
Large County Average Weekly Wage in First Quarter 2019
San Francisco had the largest percentage increase in average weekly wage in the U.S., an increase of 10.2. San Francisco saw average weekly wage gain of $1,391 (77.5%) experienced in trade, transportation, and utilities which made the largest contribution to the county’s increase in average weekly wages. While over in Elkhart, IN, average weekly wages decrease of 7.6%. Within Elkhart, manufacturing made the largest impact, with an average weekly wage fall of 12.7% ($137) over the year.
