According to the latest report published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, “The Europe 2020 strategy, adopted by the European Council in June 2010, is the European Union’s agenda for jobs and growth for the current decade. As a main objective, the strategy strives to deliver high levels of employment, productivity and social cohesion in the Member States, while reducing the impact on the natural environment.”
The report mentioned that to achieve its objective, the European Union has adopted targets to be reached by 2020 in the areas of employment, research and development (R&D), climate change and energy, education and poverty reduction.
Trends in the Europe 2020 Headline Indicators
The Europe 2020 headline indicators is used as a measure to monitor the European Union progress towards its established targets. Based on the radar chart, since 2008, there has been progress in climate change. This has been through reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. However, the positive trend has been noted to have stopped progressing.
The European Union is within its reach of its target in the area of education. While, in research and development and the alleviation of poverty are deemed less promising than the other areas. Notably, if growth within the region continues, the employment target can be attained.
